Summit Session
OK, so we're diverse. Now what?
Many organizations have the external appearance of being diverse, yet are they taking full advantage of that diversity? Is diversity helping or hurting the bottom line? What conversations are necessary in order to successfully create a shared future with a multicultural workforce? What are the specific challenges in the HealthCare Industry regarding diversity and inclusion?

IMPROVING HEALTH IN DIVERSE WAYS
CIGNA values diversity in the workplace and respects the diversity of its customers. We have worked diligently to use our diverse workforce to help direct how we communicate with our customers. First, we have invested in some of the most innovative and industry-leading training for our staff - much of which was developed and initiated by our own employees. We have delivered employee education on cultural competency, health literacy, clear communication, and diversity.
Secondly, we look to our employees to help CIGNA provide clear and culturally appropriate communication to specific customer populations. For example, we have formed the Spanish Integration Team, a diverse group of employees from across departments and job roles, with a shared goal of providing excellent customer service to our Spanish-speaking customers. The Team works together to identify materials for translation, increase job-specific vocabulary, and share resources and tools. We also have established internal review teams for Spanish and Traditional Chinese languages, and cultural review teams for the African American, Hispanic and Asian populations. In addition, we are working on efforts to investigate any disparities that may exist in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender population.
We look forward to sharing what we have learned with others so they too can invest in their diverse workforce.

Journey to Diversity
Memorial Hermann is an organization that values the diversity of its patients, families, employees, physicians and vendors. The journey began with many independent individuals and groups that often were unaware of their shared efforts. Joining forces we found our common goal: embracing diversity. As we continued on the path, employees from various locations and departments joined together shaping a task force to bring education and awareness to all employees. Recently we worked diligently together on a multi-year strategic plan that introduces diversity in the system at various levels. We look forward to sharing the journey.
